‘Freedom!’: San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus sings on new Netflix show ‘Boots’

by Jayne Yutig

If you find yourself binge-watching Netflix’s new comedic drama “Boots,” listen closely — that chorus singing an iconic George Michael song might sound familiar.

The talented singers from the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus lent their voices to the new show, singing a rendition of George Michael’s hit 1990 song “Freedom!” The show is described as a bootcamp coming-of-age story that centers on new Marine Corps recruit Cameron, portrayed by Miles Heizer from “13 Reasons Why,” who is on a journey of self-discovery, during the era of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

The San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus celebrated the “Boots” premiere on Thursday with a performance at #1 Fifth Avenue in Hillcrest. Netflix featured the chorus’s song in the show’s trailer, which was released in September.

“This was such an honor! As a San Diego chorus, we’ve always had active-duty service members and veterans in our ranks. Many sang anonymously, especially before and during ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ ” San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus said in a September Facebook post.

“Today, lending our voices to a story like this feels personal.”
