Roundup: See how all of San Diego’s high school football teams fared on Friday
It takes all three phases of the game — offense, defense and special teams — to upset a highly rated team.
Friday night, No. 5 Carlsbad High School (7-0, 2-0) rolled up 187 yards rushing and 188 yards passing in a 31-17 Avocado West League win over No. 3 Mission Hills (6-1, 1-1).
And the Lancers’ special teams were just that.
Darian Webb’s 18-yard punt return helped set up the first Carlsbad score. Ethan Meyerhoof had a 69-yard kickoff return to set up the Lancers at the Mission Hills 30 and a second-quarter score.
Liam Campbell’s 21-yard punt return put Carlsbad in position for Beckham Filippini to kick a 48-yard field goal on the final play of the first half.
“Mission Hills is a really good football team. I mean, really good,” said Carlsbad coach Thadd MacNeal. “But when you run the ball like we did tonight and throw it like we did, we’re tough to beat. But throw in the special teams play we got … long returns, a long field goal … we’re tough to beat.”
