Fleeing driver allegedly breaks into occupied Allied Gardens home on Halloween night
A driver who fled from police broke into an Allied Gardens home on Halloween night and barricaded himself inside a bathroom before being arrested, San Diego police said.
The pursuit began shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, when officers tried to stop a white Ford truck that had run a red light at Navajo Road and Park Ridge Boulevard, police Lt. Travis Easter said. The driver did not stop and fled, driving the wrong way on Interstate 8 east for about 2 miles before exiting and going back into the area, he said.
After about 10 minutes, officers used a spike strip, flattening his tires and causing him to ditch the truck on Horner Street, police said. He ran through a canyon and broke into an occupied home on Hamlet Court, entering through a rear sliding glass door, according to police. He then barricaded himself in the bathroom, police said.
The family inside the home — a man, a woman and two children — called 911, reporting the intruder, police said.
Afraid of the potential for hostages, officers followed the suspect inside and fought with him in the bathroom, Easter said. Police deployed a Taser, and he was taken into custody. He was booked into jail after being evaluated at a hospital.
The 41-year-old suspect was booked into jail on charges of burglary, resisting arrest, felony evading and fleeing police while driving the wrong direction, according to jail booking records.
