ICE agents’ arrest of parent was traumatizing and inhumane

by U T Readers

Re “Encinitas lays out response after father’s immigration arrest near Park Dale school” (Aug. 21): The arrest of a parent by ICE at an Encinitas elementary school on Wednesday shocked the neighborhood. It was the third time in recent weeks that ICE agents snatched a parent bringing to or picking up a child at school, causing trauma to the children present and spreading fear among parents and educators.

ICE’s daily quota policy for roundups is leading to detention and deportation of people with no criminal record who contribute in a positive way to our society. Recent research has shown that 67% of ICE detainees this year have no criminal record.

The Leagues of Women Voters of San Diego and North County San Diego denounce these violations of constitutional principles and human dignity. We support the right of all individuals to fair treatment under the law, including due process, a fair hearing and appeal, and humane treatment.
