Moped rider seriously injured in La Jolla crash

A 57-year-old man riding an electric moped suffered life-threatening injuries in a collision with a car Aug. 27 in La Jolla.

The man was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The crash occurred at about 3:50 p.m. when the man, driving the moped south on Soledad Mountain Road, approached a “T” intersection at Caminito Blythefield as another vehicle was heading toward the intersection, police reported.

Police said the moped rider began turning left from the southbound lane, violating the right of way of a 2014 Nissan Altima driven by a 46-year-old man, and the vehicles collided.

The moped rider was taken to a hospital with injuries including a collapsed lung, a broken rib and an arm laceration.

The Altima driver was not injured.
