Police investigating fatal shooting in parking lot in Ocean Beach
San Diego homicide detectives were investigating after a fight in an Ocean Beach parking lot led to a man being fatally shot late Wednesday, officials said.
Someone called 911 around 11:30 p.m. to say that a friend had been shot behind the Hodad’s restaurant on Newport Avenue near Bacon Street, San Diego police said.
When officers arrived, they found the victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his upper body, police said. Police and paramedics rendered aid, but the victim died before he could be taken to a hospital.
According to homicide Lt. Lou Maggi, the victim was involved in a confrontation with two men in the parking lot before the shooting. The victim punched one of the men, and then the second man produced a handgun and fired, Maggi said.
The shooter and his companion ran from the lot, heading west down the north alley of Newport Avenue and then north toward Santa Monica Avenue, Maggi said in a statement.
Detectives collected evidence at the scene and interviewed witnesses, and are checking the area for security video. No arrests have been made.
Police asked anyone with information about the case to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
