State tortilla law reflects offensive stereotyping

by U T Readers

As a female of Latino descent, my family having immigrated from Zacatecas and Guadalajara, Mexico, I am offended by the new California tortilla law, which requires that folic acid be added to corn tortillas because “some Latinas” don’t eat enough during pregnancy. Is it not racism to categorize a group as having diets mainly made up of tortillas just because of their ethnic background? Isn’t that just short of saying the slur used to refer to people who eat beans? If a one-cup serving of pinto beans provides 74% of the recommended daily allowance of folic acid, who needs it in tortillas? Wouldn’t the assumption be that those eating tortillas are most likely having beans as well?

This is another example of state legislators trying to look like they are addressing “real issues” when they are ignoring what really matters to Californians, like gas prices, affordable housing, homelessness and crime.
