Weekend College Recap: SDSU stays undefeated in conference play with Field Trip game coming up

This will be a big week for the San Diego State women’s basketball team, which has won eight straight games to move to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in Mountain West play.

On Wednesday, the Aztecs host New Mexico in the annual 11 a.m. Field Trip Game at Viejas Arena. What could be a record Aztec crowd will include many students from area schools.

Then on Saturday, the Aztecs travel to UNLV for a 2 p.m. game matching the Mountain West co-leaders. The Aztecs are 4-0 on the road this season following last Saturday’s 73-72 win at Utah State.

Naomi Panganiban (La Jolla Country Day) leads the Aztecs, averaging 13.7 points per game. Fellow sophomore guard Nat Martinez is second at 10.7 followed by senior guard Nala Williams 9.9, junior forward Kennedy Lee (9.5 points, 5.3 rebounds) and sophomore forward Bailey Barnhard (Del Norte High School; 7.3 points, 5.3 rebounds).

The Aztecs are one of two local universities undefeated in women’s conference action. UC San Diego is 10-5 overall, 5-0 in Big West play and riding a four-game winning streak. Forward Erin Condron paces the Tritons at 14.5 and 7.9 rebounds per game. Guards Sabrina Ma (12.8) and Rosa Smith (12.5) follow Condron in scoring.

Meanwhile, PLNU’s women’s basketball team swept Jessup and Concordia over the weekend to improve to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in league play. The Sea Lions were paced by junior guard Izzy Navarro (Cathedral Catholic; 31 points, nine rebounds, 9 assists and 10 steals) and 6-2 senior forward Eiley Tippins (34 points, 11 rebounds) over the two wins.

Men’s basketball

The UCSD men are 13-4 overall and 3-2 in Big West play after splitting a pair of games last week. The Tritons lost 88-71 vs. Cal State Fullerton and won 69-66 at UC Riverside.

PLNU’s men (12-3, 7-2) extended their winning streak to four straight games as all five starters reached double figures in wins over Jessup (92-83) at home and Concordia (74-64) on the road. Guard Jaden Matingou (St. Augustine High School) had 34 points, five rebounds and four assists. Forward Andrew Nagy had 33 points and seven rebounds and was backed by junior guard Caden Harris (28 points, nine rebounds, four assists), senior guard James Nobles (26 points, eight rebounds, five assists) and junior forward Andrew Hommes (25 points, 12 rebounds, four assists).

Cal State San Marcos (8-5, 5-3) won 92-91 in two overtimes at Cal State San Bernardino and 79-60 at Cal Poly.

Freshman guard Chris Carillo (La Jolla Country Day) had 45 points, four rebounds and four assists in the two games.

JC basketball

Sixth-ranked MiraCosta College is the only remaining unbeaten women’s team in the California Community College Athletic Association, while San Diego City and Miramar colleges lead the Pacific Coast Athletic Association men’s standings.

MiraCosta opened PCAC play with wins over Imperial Valley (99-44) and Cuyamaca (97-40) last week to run the Spartans’ record to 17-0. No starter played more than 20 minutes in either of the two wins with Melia Hinojos scoring a total of 34 points in the two games off the bench.

Meanwhile, the San Diego City men defeated Imperial Valley (111-67) and Cuyamaca (85-77) to improve to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in PCAC play. Freshman swingman Dylan Griffin (University City High School, 17.3 points a game) and sophomore guard Junior Camacho (14.2) pace the Knights in scoring.

Miramar (9-8. 4-1) defeated Palomar 92-87 last Friday to set up a Wednesday showdown with SDCC at 6 p.m. on the Jets’ floor. Palomar (11-5) fell to 3-1 with the loss at Miramar.

Women’s diving

San Diego State junior Isabella Gomez finished second in the platform finals Sunday at the Bruin Diving Invitational at UCLA. Aztecs junior Alina Skrocki finished seventh in the final platform standings, while freshman Belen Cano was 11th in the platform competition.

Men’s tennis

San Diego State defeated UC San Diego 4-0 and lost 4-0 to 19th-ranked USC in a Saturday doubleheader played in Los Angeles.
