Weekend college report: USD stays hot in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball

The University of San Diego’s two soccer teams are continuing their fast starts to the 2025 season.

USD’s women (3-0-4) are undefeated after seven games for the first time in program history, and the 10th-ranked Toreros men are 4-1-2 after defeating UC Santa Barbara and tying Kansas City.

Sophomore forward Iain Wagner (St. Augustine High School) scored two goals for the USD men last week, while junior forward Steven Ramirez had a goal and an assist.

Senior forward Josefine Schlichting scored goals in the women’s team’s 1-1 tie with Long Beach State and 3-2 win over Cal Baptist. Schlichting scored the tiebreaker in the win and has netted goals in three straight games with four on the season.

• SDSU sophomore forward Victoria Miller was named the Mountain West Conference Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals on just four shots in wins over Pepperdine and UC Riverside. Junior midfielder Katie Senn added two goals and an assist. SDSU is 3-2-1.

•  San Diego State’s men’s soccer team lost to Oregon State at home to fall to 2-5.

• Point Loma Nazarene’s men’s soccer team improved to 2-1-1 after defeating Colorado School of Mines 4-0 and Regis 1-0. Forward Emmett Layman had two goals and an assist against Mines. Elijah Langford decided the Regis game on a penalty kick.

• PLNU’s women (1-2-1) lost to second-ranked Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0.

• The Cal State San Marcos women (1-0-2) tied Concordia 1-1 with a goal by sophomore forward Addison Leite.

• Palomar College’s women beat Mesa College 1-0, ending a streak of 17 straight losses to the Olympians since 2012. Freshman Taylor Devaney scored the game’s only goal and goalkeepers Nathalie Mancilla (San Dieguito Academy) and Gianna Velasco combined on the shutout for Palomar (2-1-1). Mesa fell to 1-4.

•  The nationally ranked Cuyamaca College men and Southwestern College women continue to win. Esteban Salas (Bonita Vista High School) and Luciano Hermosillo (Monte Vista High School) scored and Luis Alvarez (San Ysidro High School) turned in a shutout as Cuyamaca (3-0-1) defeated Cerritos College 2-0. Freshman forward Melany Perez (Morse High School) scored four times as the Southwestern women (3-0-2) defeated Grossmont 6-0.

Women’s volleyball

Sophomore setter Kylie Munday had 50 assists and junior outside hitter Nemo Beach had 20 kills Sunday in Seattle as the University of San Diego defeated host Washington in five sets to win the Husky Invitational. USD also defeated Arizona in five sets to improve to 5-3 during a stretch of eight straight road matches to start the season. The Toreros open their home schedule against Yale on Thursday.

• San Diego State (4-4) lost 3-1 to the hosts Saturday in the championship game of the Long Beach State Tournament after handing Oregon (3-2) its first loss of the season and defeating UC Riverside 3-0. Junior middle blocker Amber Keen had a career-high 14 kills against Oregon.

• PLNU (6-1) won the Metro State Tournament in Denver with wins over No. 21 Bentley, No. 5 West Texas A&M, No. 25 Wayne State and West Florida. Senior outside hitter Abigail Nua had 15 kills, four blocks and two aces in the championship match against West Florida.

• Miramar College (9-4) lost just one set over four matches to win its own tournament under new coach Brooke Callahan.

JC football

Quarterback Brayten Silbor completed 12 of 22 passes for 212 yards and three touchdowns, running back Jamarei Ashby-Phan rushed for 94 yards on 13 carries and tight end Josiah Jefferson caught five passes for 86 yards and a touchdown Saturday as Southwestern College defeated Long Beach City College 38-14. The Jaguars are 3-0 after winning two games all last season.

Men’s tennis

San Diego State had six wins at the Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. Brock Anderson logged three singles wins and teamed with Denis Maijarov and William Kleege (Torrey Pines High School) to win doubles matches. Maijarov also scored a win in singles.
